Re: Kerry Pro Low D - Overtones on low notes
Hello, Nismology. Welcome to the board. Lots of interesting and valuable information awaits you. With a few members of my band, I heard Kevin Crawford and Lunasa perform, earlier this week, in a small town near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. One of the selections had Kevin and 2 of his band-mates play 3 ...

Re: Narrow Low D
I own a Goldie narrow bore low D, with a medium hard blower mouthpiece. While I consider the overall sound of the whistle to be more complex in overtones over that of some low D's, it is in line with all Goldie instruments. I would not call it scratchy or breathy.

Re: What's woad?
I have not heard WHOAD discussed for a long time. In my whistle infancy, a whole lot of years ago, it was the following;

Re: Burke Composite Alternative
Nothing sounds quite like a Burke composite. The closest I have ever heard is a model made of Dymondwood - a composite, by Paul Busman. Every now and then, you will see one for sale... I was a musical arts teacher in my earlier life. I taught students from Middle School through university levels, du...

Re: Went nuts and bought the Water Weasel from the Irish Flute Store
Memories... After Glenn died, I developed a need for a light, relatively bullet-proof high D. I wrote to Glenn, and his daughter answered my note. She had gone into his shop, and found both a high D and C Water Weasel, with different color fipple blocks. I purchased both. Those two instruments have ...

Re: Mack Hoover Updates
Mack and I share a birthday date, rubenroks12. He is about 10+ years older than me, and I am a ... uh ... well advanced Senior Citizen. Mack is just fine, y'all. He lives in his unique and beautiful home in Colorado, with some of the coolest interior decorated walls on the planet. When I entered the...

Re: Goldie Narrow Bore Low D
Yes... Hole #3 on my instrument is larger than on other low Ds I have played. However, it is not quite as large as is seen in the pictures on this thread. I suppose my rather subjective estimate could be because of the angle and reflections in the photo itself, but I know Colin is always experimenti...

Re: Goldie Narrow Bore Low D
Yes, Richard, mine does have the rings. Interestingly enough, for my hands they make holding the instrument much more comfortable than a standard low D.

Re: Hard blow versus soft blow
...And just maybe, this is part of the reason I find Colin's narrow-bore low D so pleasant sounding and playing ... I use a medium-hard blower whistle head, which should make the high notes fit into the 'stiff' - more 'resistance' / 'back pressure' description, but the upper register on this Goldie ...

Re: Goldie Narrow Bore Low D
When it comes to folk instruments, my main instrument is hammer dulcimer. I was fortunate to get to know, and become close to, a guy named Sam Rizzetta, who died a little over a half year ago. Check his exhibit out in the Smithsonian, sometime... I spent so very many happy hours on his mountain top ...

Re: Goldie Narrow Bore Low D
The joy of narrow bore whistles? Yup. Me also, Richard. For awhile, a lifetime ago, I played large, or 'session bore' instruments, which I suppose are excellent for ... uh, session work, but not so much on stage, with a mic. I experimented, and found 'narrow-bore' instruments. For many, many years n...
