Re: Is this "cheating?"

I grew up in the Fife and Drum community of New England. When I went to large musters, I would position myself sort of behind a really good player in order to follow their fingerings! Even now some (mumble mumble ) years later, whenever possible I still watch a musicians fingerings. For me, at least...

Re: Breton Music - Expert Help Needed

Hi Paul! I am writing to vouch for what Brad said about the music making sense .... I had the great opportunity to meet Brad in early October and learned a couple of Breton dance tunes from him. As we went along, Brad kept saying the tunes made more sense when combined with the dance. After an hour ...

Re: Bowed Psaltery

I'm here! I'm here! (waving hand wildy while jumping up and down) Hi! Sorry Tim. It has been a while, hasn't it? I have found that for right now, when playing my bowed psaltery, that I am playing more slow and plaintive tunes. Trying to whip thru "Silver Spear" or "Old Copperplate&quo...

Re: Retrograde Mercury, Mercury Retrograde

I hate to be the "gloom and doom" person...but while it may be a time for reunions, Mercury Retrograde periods can screw up computers, television sets and other elecrtonic devices. Mercury rules communication, but more informal communications, like writing, speaking, short shopping sprees ...

Re: UPDATE! Bowed psaltery help

Tim, The psaltery is rock maple for the back and spruce for the front. I am not sure of the model name...I don't even know if there are model names, but it is 2 1/2 octaves. The folks at Song of the Wood were kind enough to rosin the bows (yes...I took your advice and got two) and the bar of rosin t...

UPDATE! Bowed psaltery help

Its here!!!! It arrived via UPS last night. I ordrered it from Song of the Wood and I could not have been more pleased. As we can all agree, buying an instrument sight unseen (or sound unheard) is risky. But the folks at Song of the Wood were great. Last night I was up until after midnight playing. ...

Re: Bowed Psaltery Help Wanted

All righty! I have a tuner... a few actually, so that part is set. From what you've said, it seems like I want a hard wood with plain wire strings, as I want that ethereal sound that I fell in love with! As for its use...that will be a pretty broad spectrum! Everything from Traditonal Irish to RenFa...

Re: Bowed Psaltery Help Wanted

Thank you Tim! As it turns out, I had ear marked "Song of the Wood" as one of the makers I was interested in; also on the list was "Unicorn Strings". I looked thru the ones you suggested and also was very interested in "Master Works". So tomorrow I will be contacting bo...

Bowed Psaltery Help Wanted

Hi Everyone! I am looking to learn how to play a bowed psaltery. My question is: who are reputable manufacturers/dealers? I don't need a top of the line model while I am learning, but...I don't want to end up with a lovely Pakistani wall decoration! (yes, I play Irish flute, and yes...I do understan...

Re: This duck walks into a bar...

A B-flat, a D-flat, and an F walk into a bar. The bartender says to them, "I'm sorry we don't serve minors here"... So the D-flat leaves and the B-flat and the F have an open fifth between them.

Re: Relax!

Relax! Yes, indeed! Perhaps the best advice any of us will be given, and sometimes the hardest to follow. My flute instructor/mentor is always after me to keep relaxed. There are so many things to focus on..."how is my tone?" "how is my tempo?" "Will I remember this measure ...
