Re: Terminology questions
It's out of my league to reproduce, but some years ago I saw graphs produced from electronic analysis of the sounds produced by various instruments. Perhaps the patterns produced could help with comparisons between whistles/recorders/more whistles rather than relying on the terms that get used here,...

Re: Red Gum
There are many species commonly called Red Gum. It's an easy call if all that you have is a piece of local timber and it's red. Generally speaking, the majority of these are too liable to move with moisture for use as whistles.

Re: Wood
As far as the sound characteristics of wood vs other materials goes, I personally don't believe the choice of material makes a huge difference. Not a huge difference perhaps, but certainly noticeable. I'm possibly unique in that I make whistles in wood, brass and ally, all using delrin substantiall...

3D printing
Is anyone in the C&F community into 3D printing? One application I'd like to explore is the fabrication of keys, particularly for low-low whistles.

Re: Cutting the soundblade
If you are thinking about accuracy and repeatability, you should be thinking about machining rather than hand cutting or filing. When I look at John Sindt's work, it suggests to me that he uses a horizontal milling machine. Also some of the Alba whistles, but I suspect a different approach with the ...

Lovely grain patterns and light effects in that treated maple and you're right, the pic doesn't do it justice!

Re: Tubing sourcing and math
Really, the only way to get that sort of accuracy over a range of tube sizes is to buy solid stock and drill and ream it and turn it down to your dimensions. I'd question whether it is really necessary to go to those lengths though, good results can be had from using less than optimal tubing. I supp...

Re: 2nd Hand John Sindt whistles for sale
Believe it or else, I once owned a "Syndt" whistle that I bought on eBay from Mr Bartlett. It was a one-off that Earle made, "in the style of a Sindt". It had the thick metal headjoint of a Sindt, with a Syn's distinctive tulip shaped Delrin mouthpiece. "Syndt" was aci...

Re: Syn Mid Range
I have just this morning tucked the last of the first batch into their little sleeping bags. With a few on hand to play with I have formed a better idea about how they perform. For myself, i'd describe them as fitting sort of mid-way between the high range and the low D's. Fair volume and reasonably...

Re: Whistle Repair
Thanks for the tip on clearing the tube. If Syn Whistles could explain the process of removing the copper insert, I'll see if I'm capable of fixing the problem. Much appreciated. the Syn whistle is a treat to play. Not sure if it's appropriate to give a "shout out" to The Whistle & Dr...
