Which would you prefer?

actually i'd vote for mithril. colin always ignores me on that..

I voted Titanium. Mithril would be just too expensive, and besides that it attracts cave trolls... which, now I think about it, is probably exactly why Amar wants one.

How about spinel, sapphire, ruby or even cubic zirconia? They are all routinely lab-cultured for industrial use.

I think a whistle made entirely of ice would be very useful, because the evidence of the crime would melt away on its own.

I think jade would be entrancing. My second choice would have been titanium. Of course, if it could be obtained legally, and without killing anything, I'd take ivory. How about jet, like the beads manufactured by Jean Valjean in Montreil sur Mer? Possibilities are endless. Kryptonite?

Anything that's cultured for lab use can, theoretically, at least, develop a life of its own and attack its user. You don't want gigantic cubic zirconium whistles trampling all over Tokio.

I was thinking alongs the lines of a bequest in the elephant's will.

I vote for Corn! I love sweet corn thus my option of having a ready supply of cobs drying is great. The cobs are bio-degradable and I could probably fine a source in every city and town on this continent at any time of the year.
