Anyone familiar with Gillette Wyoming?

Post by Flyingcursor »

Hello all, been awhile.

My Niece's husband is interviewing with the Gillette Wyoming Police Department. I wonder if anyone is familiar with that area in terms of living there.

Thanks.
I'm no longer trying a new posting paradigm

A couple of close shaves there, nothing else.

Tom, WyoBadger, is the only Wyomingite I can remember

Wyoming is a bit larger that Rhode Island though

I drove through Wyoming once back in 1963, but I don't remember all that much. It was windy, though, and the Wind River Mountains were beautiful.

The best I've managed was just a sliver of the northwest corner going north in '72.

I have a picture, I took, somewhere of a black bear attempting to steal a dump truck in Jackson Hole.

Never been to Gillette, but I remember driving north on I-25 through Wyoming once when the wind was blowing so hard from the west that I had to steer the vehicle (one of the old really box-shaped Jeep Cherokees) nearly 20 degrees off course in order to stay on the road. Usually, only airplanes have to worry about maintaining a crab angle...

It's been many years since I visited the town, but I remember that Gillette had gone through several mining and energy boom/bust cycles even then. Seemed like a nice town, but it had a few big city problems like drugs in the schools, etc. Probably as a result of growing so fast. I suspect they have had time to sort that out now. I am very sure that it is still a short drive from the Big Horn Mountains and Black Hills. Excellent climbing, skiing, fishing and hunting within an hour or two.

Remember that you can take advantage of a lot of online tools. You can use Google street view to actually see what the streets, shopping centers, schools and rec centers look like. If I were considering a move there, I would check out the city zoning and planning maps. They can tell you a lot about a city's past and potential future. If schools are an issue, you can check out public school test scores online. Not as good as a local contact, but they can help pinpoint potential problem areas.

-Last passed through Gillette 30 years ago & still remember napping in the car at an empty rest area and a car filled with bored teens pulling in alongside and blasting its car stereo until I moved. Gillette has no monopoly on bored teens poking at the world around them but I've always remembered how arid & desolate both situation and landscape seemed at the time- like "The Last Picture Show".

-That image was supplanted next morning at breakfast on discovering the dusty eatery was not only friendly but featured
the cross-country driver's *second evidence (and a real +) of entering the west: Tabasco sauce a standard condiment on the tables-

*first evidence is always the cowboy hat

-Wyoming has lots of fine places which aren't evident to freeway cruisers. Talking to locals is the best way to find them.
