Careful Blackhawk, you're in danger of making this thread useful.

So I get back here after two weeks and, while two members (one feminine and one virile) of the board called me on the phone meanwhile, not one took care to mention there was action on C&F, with this utterly useless thread???

Very un-Joycean. More like Bill Bryson. "I come from Des Moines, Iowa. Someone had to..."

What is "use" anyway? Can you use this thread to brew a hot cup of "joe?" Can you use this thread to hammer in a nail, or Hold a Pint of Good Beer? Well I just figured this was a useless thread so I should be right at home in here :)

No no no, you are thinking of mountain oysters. Taters are a root vegetable that grows under ground. They can be scraped and boilt, or they can be skinned and boilt and mashed, or they can be skinned and cut into little pieces and fried up in a bit of bacon fat in a cast iron skillet till they are brown.
